SHARE IN EMPIRE GRIEF PASSING OF MONARCH UNANIMITY OF. NATIONS RULERS AND COMMUNITIES LONDON, Jan. .21. The stream of sorrow seems endless. E.very public body in Britain testifies to its grief at the King's death, and leading public figures, including Mr. Stanley Baldwin, who pays special tribute to Queen Mary's loyal and unsparing selfsacrifice in helping her consort, record the realm's great loss in the death of King, George. The heart of the entire world is awakened to sympathy. Tributes continue to pour into London from every city in communication with England's j capital.
Italian wireless stations broadcasted "God Save the King" while audiences in places of amusement stood at attention and listened! to the biography of the King and a summary of press comments. Both Houses in the Belgian Parliament adjourned. The Turkish papers are printed in black borders, and personal sketches. Japanese runners with tinkling bells, carried special editions. Flags were half-masted throughout Europe, from Teheran to Pekin. The ex-Kaiser abandoned his birthday festivities and German ex-service men cancelled their English tour and returned home. No ruler nor head of Government on the surface of the globe but has sent condolences to the British Royal House. The navies throughout the seven seas joined in ceremonial observances, H.M.A.S. Sydney participating in a minute gun salute at Gibraltar. The United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, and the Secretary of War, Mr. G. If. Dern, on behalf of the Government, called at the British limbassy and all Empire legations 1 at Washington, to extend sympathy at the death of the King, i White House took official cognisance of
his demise by postponing a Congressional reception. The House of Representatives adjourned for the day as a mark of repect for the dead monarch. The Senate is not in session.
'Mrs. Roosevelt, cancelled a White House luncheon today, at which Lady Lindsay, wife of the British Ambassador, would have been the guest of honor.
ORDER OF FREEMASONS NEW KING'S POSITION (Reed. Jan. 23, noon.) LONDON, Jan. 22. When he ascended the Throne, the late King Edward VII resigned the grand jnastership of the United Grand Lodge and became Protector of the Order of Freemasons. If precedent is followed, King Edward VIII* will resign the provincial grand mastership of Surrey and assume- the same title. King Edward was also to have been installed Grand Master. Mason of Scotland.
