OBITUARY

MR. A. H. W. SCHLICHTLLNG LOCAL CHESS CHAMPION

The many friends of Mr. August Henrv William (.Gils) Sehlichting will be sorry" to learn of his death, which took ) place this morning at the Wellington •' Hospital. The late Mr. Sehlichting underwent art operation and fajled to recover. Bom in Greymouth 62 years ago, the late Mr. Sehlichting was the eldest son 'of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. H. W. Sehlichting. As' a young, man he took up goldmining on the West Coast, He remained on the coast for a few years and then crossed to Australia, where he resumed mining and worked on numer ous fields. After spending 20 years across the Tasman. Mr. Sehlichting returned to New Zealand and settled ill Stratioi'd, where he started as a building . con : tractor. From Stratford he went to Wellington and after remaining there lor a few years ho came in 1911 to Gisborne, where he finally settled. In recent years Mr. Sehlichting has been well known in chess circles and at the time of his death he was the champion in Gisborne. Sympathy will be extended to his only child, Mrs. K. Smith, who lives near Blackpool. England, and his relatives. The funeral will leave the residence of » Mr. P. A. Johnson, 118 Iramii road, at 2.3 C p.m. on Saturday for the Ttmiheru cemetery.
