PERSONAL

Mr. Justice Northcroft was sworn in on Thursday by Mr. Justice Blair as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court. The appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of this year's amendment to the Judicature Act whereby an additional Supreme Court judge was authorised. Mr. Justice Northcroft has been hitherto an acting Supreme Court judge, pending the necessary legislative authority to permit of bis permanent appointment.

Passengers by East Coast Airways' plan» from Napier to Gisborne yesterday included Mrs W. .1. McLeod; Misses Ormiston. Billows and D. Faiam ; Messrs .1. D. McMillan, R. K. Murphy, .M. Murphy, and \V. J. McLeod. The following' were amongst those who travelled from Gisborne. Misses A. Irvine and K. Harris; the Rev. H. Daniel, Dr. C. Raymond, and Messrs T. Irvine and EG.'Marshall.

Mr (!. M. Ryan, who is on leave from the Railway Department, Wellington, is gaining general engineering experience with tho'firm of Leylanda, near Preston, particularly in regard to commercial vehicle manufacturing. Mr Ryan lately completed a 6COO miles' motor-cycle (our of the Continent, the countries traversed including Belgium, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Northern Italy, Switzerland, and France. Life in rural districts and small centres interested him greatly in all the countries toured,, and at Brussels ho found the exhibition a great attraction, especially the transport section, which is housed in a permanent ferro-concrete building. Like all travellers nowadays, he was greatly charmed with Germany, where the people were courteous and helpful to the touring public. One feature which there impressed him was the seemingly interminable procession of push-bike cyclists whq enjoy the country area every week-end.
