YOUTH OF CANBERRA
-"- ‘ - DUKE’S MESSAGE VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP CANBERRA, Nov. 1. Replying to a message of loyalty from 'the 'yoUth- of CAiibc’rfa, the Duke of Gloucester delivered- a special message to’the children of Australia, in which lie said :• | “Young, people of Canberra, lam very glad to have this chance of meeting you in an informal way and of saying a tew words to you. First of all, I wish to thank you for the message of myalty to niy father the King, who, I assure you, takes as much interest in' the happiness of each one of you as of us his subjects ill England, and: for your very- kind reference to myself. You know well enough that- ouri Empire is a great partnership of peoples’. What does partnership mean? It just means doing things together, and when you come to think of home life, and school life, of games 'and lessons, or, Inter on, business, there are very few things which we can do alone. Yt is by dbing things in company with others that we form friendships, and believe me, friendship is one of the greatest blessings of life, especially when we are in need of sympathy or help. I promise you that- you cannot be happy without friends. VALUE OF UNSELFISHNESS “There, is one very valuable tiling we learn from rtorking- and playing with others, "and Hint Jfif unselfishness. We. learn also to keep our tempers, to accept tlio umpire’s decision, and'to give credit to our opponents for doing tlieir best—in other words, consideration for the feelings of others. These things are a matter of Sportsmanship and'of loyalty. We people of British race have always been, aUd 1 let us always remain, (lie best, sportsmen and the most loyal friends in the wbfld.
“If all through life we pull our weight in whatever team we belong to, and if we arp always ready to stretch out a hand, to those less lucky than ourselves, we shall be doing our bit for oifr Own country and for tile Empire of which ,we are all so proud, And, why are we so proud of it? 1 Not 1 because of its, size, its wealth or its power, but because we feel that it is the greatest factor for good in the world. Don’t forget that as mom-Tel-s of the British ’Empire we have a .responsibility: as well as a, privilege. 1 {can sum up what. I have said in some lines If once read : “Have a heart that never hardens, A temper that- never tires, A And a touch that never hurts.” “If you follow that advice you will not only bo happy yourselves, butf you will three the* added joy of bringing happiness to others. Wiood-bye and good luck to you all.’
