WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MAKAR AKA-MAT AWHEEO MEETING There was a large attendance at the meeting of the Makaraka-Matawhero Women’s Institute in the hall on Wednesday, Mrs. Livingston being in the chair. Four new members were admitted to membership, Mesdames Proudfoot, .'French, Kilmers and Parker. A vote of condolence was passed to Miss 'l'oole and Mrs. Haisman in their bereavement, all members standing in silence. It was reported that the newly-formed gardening circle had shown considerable progress. Mrs. Dunn had been appointed secretary, and it had been arranged to set aside the last Tuesday of the month for the meetings, the competition this month to be for the best bowl of roses. An invitation was extended to the circle from the Women's Club to attend a flower display to be held in the club rooms on November 16. Schedules for the Nuhaka and Ormond flower shows were tabled. The president thanked all who liad combined to make tire ball a success, and thanks were also extended to Mrs. Marshall for the donation of- teaspoons. A report on the Wairoa council meeting was received from Mrs. Lange and listened to with great interest. Ju the roll-call, children’s humorous sayings were recited by each member, many quaint tales being told. Awards wer<? won as follows; —Six varieties of vegetables grown by an institute member: Mrs. Lange, 1. Tea shower: Miss Herbert, 1; Mrs. Me]lor, 2. Crochet d’oylcy: Miss Toole, 1; Miss M. Jackson, 2. Much interest was shown in the exhibition of articles made by the arts and crafts, circle, and the high standard of the work reflected great credit on the instructress,' Mrs., Daniels. The hall committee was,thankred for the use of the hall by the arts' and crafts circle, and in doing so Mrs. Clark also made a presentation to Mrs. Daniels in appreciation of her services during the year. A very interesting demonstration of brass work was given by Mrs. Jenkins, after which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Members were asked to make suggestions to the next meeting ■regarding the Christmas party. The hostesses during the afternoon were Mesdames Hankey, Weastall, Ryan, Dempsey and O’Connell.
