FIGHTING THE SLUMP
AMERICAN EXPENDITURE POPULARITY OF ROOSEVELT The colossal expenditure in America mi philanthropic and relief work was commented on by l Mr. G. Fitzpatrick, director of the New South Wales Community .Hospital, who passed through Auckland last week oil his way back to Sydney after a three months’ tour of the knifed States. In New York City alone, Air. Fitzpatrick said, the relief expenditure in 1912 was £10.000,000. in 1933, this bad jumped to £20,000,000, while this year the figure was £40,000,000, considered by many authorities to bo inadequate. For the whole country, the income from taxation up to June 30, 1934. was £600.000.000. but Hie actual expenditure was £1.400,000.000. Air. Donald IT. Riohburg, executive secretary to the Executive Council, had said that such an expenditure was relatively a small price to pay for a great gain, as il was only a quarter of the sum spent annually during the war. Among the large relief schemes were the dredging of the .Mississippi River, on which £28.000, 0C0 was being spent, and the building of the Missouri Dam, estimated to cost £17.000.000.
“Roosevelt, is worshipped almost as a deini-Cod, particularly by the younger generation of both political parties,’” said Air. Fitzpatrick. “The older people are only concerned in asking who is going to pay the bill for the huge works now in progress. It. seems that- there must be higher taxation, but most Americans do not realise that their taxes are only about a third of those levied in Croat Rriiain. Another suggested remedy is increased inflation."
