ARMISTICE DAY

OBSERVANCE ON SUNDAY R.S.A. CHURCH PARADE SIXTEENTH ANNIV ERSA RY The sixteenth anniversary of the Armistice, which operated from 11 a.in. on November 11, 1918, after more than four years of uninterrupted hostilities on the Western Front, will be observed throughout the British Empire on Sunday next. At the request of His Majesty the King, the ceremonies accompanying the observance will include the twominutes’ silence, in honor of the war dead of all nations, and in churches throughout the Empire special services commemorative of the anniversary will be field. The fact that the anniversary this year falls on a Sunday has prompted many organisations to organise church parades of their members, and in Gisborne the Returned Soldiers’ Association will bold such a function, tlie parade forming in Fitzherbert street arid inarching to Holy Trinity Church. Those members of the association who wish to attend the services of other churches - will there break off, and later they will reassemble for the dismissal of the parade. It has been arranged throughout New Zealand that church services will commence on Sunday next at 10.45 a.rm, so that the two-minutes’ silence may.be observed at 11 a.m., the hour of day at which Hie guns ceased their booming in all the active theatres of war on November 11, 1918. The hour of assembly for the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s parade will be fixed with this in mind. Relatives of deceased soldiers who propose to,lav wreaths upon the Wayside Cross at Holy Trinity Church, have inquired as to* whether the usual service will be held in the open air. There will be no open-air service this year, it is understood, but the laying of wreaths upon the Wayside Cross will be, made the feature of a ceremony which will follow the indoor church service.
