ABANDONMENT URGED BACKER’S MESSAGE ■ (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) NEW YORK, April 6. Mr. Jacob Ruppert, one of the principal backers of tjie Antarctic expedition, after a discussion on the conditions with Commander Gjortson, radioed to Admiral Byrd urging him to abandon his plan to occupy the advance post through the winter.

“I- am much worried about your personal safety and earnestly urge you to return to the base.” The first question Mr. Ruppert asked him was i “Why is Admiral Byrd going down there all by himself?” The commander responded: “I don’t know, but. tho hut would have been a tight fit for two men.” , He explained that it , had. been the original plan to have two men to undertake the , observations, but the delay caused ,by the difficulties in landing supplies had made this impossible;
