Mr. * James- Smith; retiring superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company, was the guest of honor at a complimentary social given by the branch of ‘the New Zealand InstitSe of Marine .and Power Engineers cn Saturday evening. Mr. Smith was bora on the Clyde and served his time at Glasgow. He went to , sea in 1882, one of liis first ships being a paddle steamer.
