CHARGED BY SWORDFISH
LAUNCH AT MAYOR ISLAND HULL PIERCED NEAR DECK A swordfish hooked by Mr P. llopkin, of Tuuranga, from the launch Kingfisb, was responsible for the most thrilling incident yet reported on the Mayor Island deep-sea fishing ground. After it had been hooked tne swordfish gave a magnificent display by raising itself perpendicularly out of the tjatcr and propelling itself on its tail iii frantic endeavors to shake out the hook. Finding this of little uvuil, the swordfish made a lightning charge on •the surface of the water, striking the bow of the launch 4ft. above the waterliue and -within Sin. of the deck. The impact was terrific, and the big -fish buried its sword in the boat to a depth of din. The sword broke off tied the fish leapt 10ft. in the air and ’continued to fight gamely for half an hour before it was landed. Its display of leaping is described by the party as being marvellous. Fortunately when the swordfish charged no one was in the bow of the and Mr E.‘ Chadbnu warned all ou board .W'heu the fish commenced its spirited charge some distance away. Ho states that if the launch had been broadside on the big fish would have landed bn the vessel.
