THE WORLD’S GOLD
PRODUCTION INCREASING
LONDON, Dec. 23
In his annual report the controller of the Royal Mint says that one of the paradoxes of the situation is that while gold is disappearing from the sight ot the ordinary mortal its production is m creasing yearly. Nevertheless an-emin-ent authority estimates that the whole of the gold produced in the last 500 years could be packed in the small space of a 40-fool cube, and it would put only £5 a week in gold into the pay envelopes of 18,000,000 men for a single year. The value of the world’s production of gold in 1932 exceeded £100,000,000 at the Mint price of 77s IQjd per oz. standard, of which 70 pin cent, came from the Empire-—upwards of 48 per cent, from South Africa.
The report refers to an experiment in producing coins with an edge device which offers greater obstacles to conn lerfeiliug. It is hoped that the experiment will lie successful.
