N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY .POSTPONED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The Now Zealand tennis championships were continued in Wilding Park in dull weather in the morning, when several interesting matches were witnessed in the women’s singles event. Heavy rain at 2 o’clock interrupted the fourth round of the men’s singles match between C. Sproule (New South Wales) and C. Aligns (Canterbury champion). Sproule had won the first set, and was one-love in the second when play was stopped. In the fourth round of the women's singles match between Miss N. Hall (New South Wales) and Miss L. Bickorton (New South Wales), Miss Bick* erton was leading I—3 in the first set when play was stopped. After waiting for an hour the downpour continued and the officials decided to abandon play for the day. Included in the matches postponed were Andrews v. Dymond, Donohoo v. Barnett, and Malfroy v. Sturt. These will probably meet to-morrow morning to decide the semi-finalists in the men's singles. In the women’s singles, Miss Marjorie Macfarlnno (Auckland) surprised the galleries by beating Miss D. Nicholls (Wellington), title holder, in two sets. The slightly heavy cdurts seemed to upset the Wellington player. Good form was shown by Miss T. Poole (Canterbury), in her quarterfinal match with Miss U. Valkcnbourg (New South Wales). The conditions suited the solid driving of the Christchurch player, but the Australian shortened her game after losing the first set, and forced Miss Poole into errors.
Acting on medical advice, Miss D. Dingle (New South Wales) withdrew because of an injured thumb.
