i POVERTY BAY'S BIG WIN INNINGS AND 303 FUNS HAWKE CUP ELIMINATION The Poverty Bay representative cricket team secured an innings victory witli 305 runs to spare over Waiapu in the J-lawke Cup elimination match, concluded at. the Oval, yesterday. Waiapu made only 1.22 runs in. the second innings, after Poverty Bay had made,' Os huge total of 554. Waiapu, in the second strike, lost an early wicket, when Cottle was stumped, the score standing at only five. Nurse and Fox carried Hie. score on to 28, when Fox was caught by Beeves off Sharp. Nurse, followed 11 runs later. The brightest partnership of the innings'was seen when Oates and Gilmore became associated. They added 33 before Lockett got Gilmore’s wicket, Die score board reading four wickets for 72 runs. Hati made a short stand with Oates, and took the score to 97 for five wickets. Oates, who had been batting aggressively and with great confidence, lost his wicket to an l.b.w. decision after he had scored 38, which included four fours. The score was then at 105 for six wickets, and the innings did not last long after that, coining to a close at 122.
Sharp was the most successful of the bowlers. Ho took seven of the wickets at- a cost of 7.28 runs per wicket. The batsmen were often tempted by his slow, leg spins.
