VISITORS TO DIOMEDE
TRANSPORT ARRANGED NO CHARGE TO BE MADE Through the generosity of the Gisbpjne Lightering Stevedoring Company, arrangements have been made for tho conveyance of visitors to and from H.M.S. Diomede during the vessel’s stay at Gisborne, and this and other matters in connection with the warship s visit were discussed at a meeting of the Gisborne Publicity League, last evening. The meeting was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. John Jackson, and there W(6re present also Mrs. A. G- Terry, and Messrs. T. G. Johns, D. S. Thompson, H.. F. Forster, G. J. Jeune, J. 0. Musgrave, and E. W., Forrest. Owing to pressure of preventing him from devoting sufficient to the furtherance o’f the affairs offfthe league, Mr. J. M. Kay tendered hk ! resignation as secretary and treasurer. His resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr. C. E. Johns was appointed to.fill the vacancy. A letter was received from the Gisbprne Lightering Stevedoring Company stating that the company would be pleased to convey children to and from H.M.S. Diomedo free of charge, provided that the children were accompanied by their teachers, and that the cqjppany was under no liability for accidents. With the company’s three vessels it. would be possible to carry about 155 passengers each trip, but application had been made to the Marine Department for a special permit to increase this number. It was not possible at present ta indicate a timetable or the number of trjps, as there was a possibility of an oyerseas vessel being at Gisborne at the same time, in which case the trips to the warship would have to be limited ta fit in with the company’s lightering [work. On the motion of Mr. Forster, it was resolved to abandon the proposed street sports meeting on _the Saturday during the visit of the Diomede. An invitation to the officers and men of 'the warship to visit the thjree bowling gyeens was received from tne Gisborne Bowling Centre, the letter stating that the centre would arrange to meet the visiors at the wharf and conduct them to tha greens. It was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to the centre for its assistance in this respect. It was agreed to ask business people to donate prizes for some of the events to be held at the river carnival. Messrs. Forster and Forrest were authorised to prepare the programme advertisement.
