PEOPESSOR W. HEWITSON

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night

The death occurred suddenly this afternoon Of the Rev. Professor William Hewitson, aged 72 years. Irofessot Hewitson had charge of Ivnox C hurch from 1895 to 1908, when ho was appointed fust master and professor of practical training in Ivnox College, the otUcial training institution of the Iresbytcrian Church in the Dominion. He remained there for 20 years .Tie was elected moderator of tho Presbyterian General Assembly in. 1928. Professor Hewitson leaves a widow to mourn her loss.

The death occurred suddenly ui Thames of Mr. John Scott, agent of the Northern Steam Ship Company at Coromandel for many years.

Deceased was widely known throughout Marlborough, and had taken a prominent part in the, public, life of the community, Born at Worcester, .England, 78 years ago, ho came out to New Zealand as a> young, man. He joined the. Armed Constabulary and was stationed at Parihuku: during the days ol the Maori trouble.! Appointed purser on the. Union Company’s Tara were in the East Coast, .trade, in i. 890, Mr. Ormsby H. Gillon, whose! death occurred in Sydney on Sunday, was for many years senior purser,in.the company’s service. He bold the world’s record for length of service at soa- ip that capacity. He, tra velled 2,600,000 miles to and fro across the lasman, crossing that sea upwards of 2000 times, serving in every intercolonial passenger .steamer in the company’s fleet. He was probably the best-known man in the Union Company's fleet to regular travel-’ levs between New Zealand and Sydney, and was always exceedingly popular with both passengers and fellow-employees.
