AMATEUR CODE YESTERDAY’S MEETING Success 'again attended the weekly track meeting of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club held on the Childers road reserve last evening. There was a good attendance and every event was closely contested. In the 120yds. Junior Men’s Handicap a good performance was put up by C. Sebire, who was off Byds. In tile last 10yds. he made a great effort and breasted the tape barely lft. j ahead oi Jenkins, the third placed competitor^ being about the same distance away. Ihe final of the 120yds. Men’s Handicap also provided some excitement. At the finish there was only bin. between the six runners. The 440yds. Marist Schoolboys’ Handicap, the last distance for the Mercer Cup, was won by J. Hayes in good style off scratch. Having won the 100 and* 220yds. also, Hayes becomes the winner of the cup with 15 points to his credit, W. Dunn with 11 points being second. After the race the cup was presented to Hayes by the club’s president, Mr. H. F. Forster, who said that ho was a most promising runner and accordingly wished him every success m the future. Beale, a club cyclist who has ■“in the money” m every race this season, again distinguished himself by takin.r the two-mile wheel event in fast time.” A good staying runner turned up in F Allen, who fought a hard finish tc win the 1000yds Flat Handicap from H. E Club records were made by W. McDonald, F. Allen, Miss Leigh and by C. Church, a cyclist who won his heat of the two-mile event in smm. 26sec. hie public welcomed the return to the track of S Gooch, formerly scratch man in the cycle fields at all distances, and though he has not vet struck form, he is expected to give the wheelman of the club some tough races m the near future. Lady contestants showed a general improvement in form. The last evening meeting of the year will be held on Thursday next, when .the competitors in the respective divisions will have their final try-out for the holiday sports meetings. It was noted bv officials at last evenings meeting that there was no tendency to bold ott for the holiday sports, on the part of the competitors, the fast times generally made being a fair indication of the genuineness of the contests.
