There was an unpleasant surprise for a motorist when he reached a certain spot on the Whakatane-Rotorua road recently. Ho entered a thick swarm of bees, dozens of which were swept into the car, but luckily nobody was stung.
Tho recent series of mishaps to aero club machines is understood to have had a serious effect on the dubs, remarks tho Manawatu Standard. Recently, three aeroplanes wore damaged to such an extent that they could not be recommissioned, and the clubs are finding it difficult to obtain sufficient machines to train the number of pupils offering. It is understood that a plane which was for sale in Wellington a few days ago was very eagerly sought after and purchased. There is a definite shortage in tho Dominion.
Tho London Times speaks of the valuable work done through the agency of the Society of Friends in providing work for unemployed. Last year nearly 63,000 men were enabled to cultivate little plots of ground from which, in the aggregate, they obtained not far short of .0400,000 worth of produce. There were fresh vegetables for their homes—an important addition to the food supplies of their families and a not Unimportant supplement to the food supplies of the ration. Health-giving food was the reward nf healthy out-door occuuution. The allotment holders themselves reaped additional benefits in bodies made healthier by congenial labor and healthier minds and spirits.
