IMPRESSIVE PETITION
MAORIS AND WAITANGI One of the most impressive, petitions ever presented to Parliament was handed in by Mi'. ft. T. Tirikuteiie (Intl., Southern Maori) in the House of Representatives last week. The petitioner was Wiremu Katana, who produced the evidence of seven volumes to testily to the fact that he was acting on behalf of 30,128 memorialists in requesting that (lie Treaty of Waitangi should he embodied in the ■Statute Books of the Dominion of New Zealand, the Dominions of the British Commonwealth and the British Government, in order that all may know that the treaty is operative, and also to preserve tho ties. of brotherhood between Maori and pakeha for all time.
The signatures to the memorial show that the work of canvassing support for the petition lias extended over several years. The volumes containing the signatures turned the scale, at 161 b.
