TENSION RELIEVED

SPAIN AND THE CHURCH RESIGNATION OF PRIMATE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received October 2, 10 a.m.) MADRID, Oct. 1. Tension between the Church and the State has been considerably eased by the Pope’s acceptance of Cardinal Segura’s resignation from the primacy. The Minister of Justice, Senor de los Rios, comments that the resignation will have enormous importance as a corrective to those with wrong ideas of what Catholicism should be in relation to the State, and also with clericals who are move concerned with politics than religion. Negotiations between the Spanish Government and the Vatican, reports an American broadcast, have reached a delicate stage and are practically at a deadlock. The issues mainly at stake are permitting divorce and non-religious education.
