4A SCHEME RESUMED TUITION PLAN OPERATES Seventeen men already have been placed on Gisborne farms under the Unemployment Board’s 4A scheme, which was resumed yesterday, while arrangements are being made to replace several more men. At the same time, a, tuition plan for the absorption of youths.of 16 and 17 years of age lias been instituted, but so far no boys have been placed -in this district. When the 4A scheme was in operation last season, about 100 men were found positions on Gisborne farms. Tt is impossible to say how many men will be absorbed in this manner during the present period, but the farmers appear to be taking, interest in it again, and a ■number of inquiries have been made concerning it apart from the instances in which men have been already placed. The tuition scheme is another plan Fo help the youth of the country, the 4A scheme includes youths of 18 and 19 vears- of age, while the tuition plan enables bovs of 16 and 17 to be taken on, The only obligation on the part of the farmers is to provide suitable accommodation and food, and to give tile boys instruction in farm work, l’he Unemployment Board will provide each of the boys placed With an allowance of 5s a week. It. is a condition that no permanent hands are to be put off bv tt farmer merely for the purpose of replacing them with boys, whose chief function is to learn tile rudiments of farming rather than to do actual work on the place, although, of course, a certain amount of work will bo expected from the hoys. Before sanction will be given ■to the placing of any boy under this scheme, the -Unemployment Board will satisfy itself that ho will be properly treated. The term of tuitiou for each boy is to he-for one year.
