REAL MUSIC WANTED
THEATRE ORCHESTRAS (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Although many.of the musicians who played in picture theatre orchestras have been out of work for some months now, no eases of actual hardship are reported, and there is some prospect that they .will be re-engaged when Christchurch theatres restore their orchestras, as Wellington and Auckland have already done. A large orchestra is contemplated for the Regent Theatre, and there seems little doubt that soon other of the theatres will follow the northern example and present again orchestral music. Before the advent of the talkies about 40 musicians were playing every evening at picture theatres. Now this number is reduced to about 15. Practically all the other 25, however, took up orchestral playing merely as a side-line in addition to 'their work during the day. Thus, although they find their incomes substantially reduced, they can still depend on their' business wages.
