THE KAHIKA
TROUBLE WITH CREW DISPUTE OVER WAGES Since the Union S.S. Co.’s cargo steamer Kahika, which went ashore on Waikanne beach on Thursday morning, was refloated yesterday, trouble has arisen with the crew in regard to the rates of pay to be received during the time the vessel is in tow on the voyage to Wellington. So far as can be ascertained, the dispute has not reached a serious stage, but sonic difficulty may be experienced with the crew when the steamer is ready to sail this afternoon.
An examination of ti e Kahika’s hull was made yesterday, and everything was found to be in order. The vessel is considered to be perfectly seaworthy, but will be unable to make the trip to Wellington alone, owing to there not being sufficient driving power, from the two rcipuining blades on the propeller, which was damaged during the gale on Thursday morning. In view of this the Kahika will be towed by .the Union Co.’s sea-going tug Tcrawliiti, to which she will be secured by two 60-fathom cables. The Kahika’s engines will be used on the voyage to Wellington/ where she will go on the slip for repairs. The Kahika’s cargo of general merchandise and produce from southern ports for discharge here was transhipped yesterday to lighters. None of the cargo was damaged. The Terawhiti, with the Kahika in tow, should sail this afternoon for Wellington.
