QUALIFYING CONTEST TURANGANUI BEAT CELTIC TWO-DAY MATCHES BEGUN The two-day matches in the A and B sections for the Barry and Cranney Cups respectively commenced at the Oval cm Saturday afternoon, and in addition the match between Turanganui and Celtic to determine which team would he included in the A section was finalised. In this contest, which was commenced a week ago, Turanganui scored 123 for the first innings, and Celtic were dismissed on Saturday for 80, giving Turanganui a victory and placing them m the A section, one innings only being played. In the A section, which will bo completed next Saturday, Old Boys, having lost five wickets for 174 runs, look like securing a victory over Civil Service, whose first innings produced 126, while Turanganui are in a similarly happy position, having compiled 102 for- the loss of four wickets, against High School’s total for the innings of 73. Celtic have every prospect of defeating City in the B section: City made 85> in their first innings, and when time was called Celtic had six wickets down for 158, J. Scholium with 108, not out, being mainly responsible for the score. QUALIFYING MATCH - The qualifying match between Turanganui and Celtic gave the former team, who batted first, a victory by a margin of 43 runs. SECTION A TURANGANUI v. SCHOOL Having defeated Celtic in the qualifying round for the A section, Turanganui proceeded to make almost certain their victory over High School in that section. School batted first and compiled 73 to which total Heasley contributed 23, Owen 19, and James 18. For Turanganui, Jennings took five wickets for 22 runs, and Blair four for 20. In the other match in the A section Old Boys left the field at the .call of time with a total of 174 for the loss of five wickets, which gave them a conn fortable margin over the total of 126 compiled by Civil Service in their first strike. Griffiths, with 50, and Connan, with 18, were the only Civil Service men to reach double figures, while 21 secured from extras helped the total along. Celtic, who'as the result of their match with Turanganui earlier in the afternoon qualified for section B, appeared to have every chance of defeating City, whose first innings total was 85, while Celtic compiled 158, and have still four wickets to fall. The feature of the match was the Kitting of J. Scholium, who was not dismissed before time was called, and who lias 108 to his credit. Gisborne Club, being able fo field only nine men, made a rather poor showing against Poverty Bay Club, the first innings producing only 42, against their opponents total of 144. Gisborne batted 1 first, and Duncan (12) and Robertson (10), were the only men to do anything at all with the bowling of Turbott and Cooke. Hie former taking five for 13, and the latter two for 9. At the commencement of their innings Poverty Bay did well, but the fail of the field failed rather badly. Cave was the top scorer with 46, and Cooke made 23, Reeves 15, and Turbott 14.
