REFUGE UNDER SHIP’S BOILER

LONDON, Nov. 5. News lias reached Hull of a thrilling fire scene in the Blue Star oil tanker Trojan. The tanker was bound for Vancouver, when eight men of the en-gine-room and stokc-hold staff were cut oil by the flames which followed the bursting of an oil jet They took refuge in the bilges Under the boiler, and for three hours were lying in oil and water while the flames roared above them. William Arthur James, one of the firemen, a Welshman, sang songs to keep up the spirits of his companions. HOTTER-AND HOTTER While James was singing the ship’s plates were becoming hotter and hotter, and the water in which the men lay wits' approaching boiling point. Hope had, almost gone when providentially a large steam pipe burst and escaping steam smothered the flames. William Teimison, another Hull fireman, became demented, and, rushing back to the engine-room, lost his life.
