SHAKESPEARE IN MELBOURNE
According to a speech delivered by Mr. Allan.Wilkie at the conclusion of his Melbourne season, his eight weeks there resulted in financial loss. The Melbourne Herald reports him as stating that he had lost £2OOO on the season ; but that lie was neither bitter nOr regretful, but proud of- what he had accomplished. He did not regret having undertaken the, immense task of producing tlio whole of Shakespeare's plays, nor did he boast of having realised a part of his ambition by having staged 26 of them. But he did claim with pride and justification that he had brought thousands of people of all ages into very close friendship with the most endearing and beautiful things in English literature. Mr. Wilkie mentioned that he had addressed an appeal to the Prime Minister for a Government subsidy, similar to that given to Shakespearean companies in other countries ; but whether this was forthcoming or not he • would not loweV the high standard of his productions.
