ORCHARDISTS' LOSSES
HAWKE'S BAY HAILSTORM
(Per Press Association.) NAPIER, hist night
After a survey of the greater part of the commercial Brehards in the area swept by yesterday's hailstorm, Mr. N. J. Adnmson, Government Orchard Instructor, concluded that 100 acres of orchards (tomatoes and small fruits not included) had been completely devastated, and between 600 and 700 acres had suffered damage ranging in degree from serious to appreciable. He estimates the loss to the export trade at 40,000 cases of apples and pears. The damage done to the trees means that growth will be retarded to a considerable extent, and the orchards will suffer an appreciable setback. If orehnrdists who escaped the storm export the bulk of their crop, those who suffered will have a better chance of marketing locally fruit with slight blemishes.
