HOPES RISING

HIS MAJESTY'S CONDITION SUCCESSFUL OPERATION INFECTION LOCATED (Elec, Tel. Copyright- United Press Assn.) (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received Dec. 13, 2 p.m.) LONDON, Doc. 12. A bulletin issued at 8.45 p.m. states that an operation on the King for the drainage of the right side of the chest was successfully performed this evening. His Majesty's condition is satisfactory. An official statement issued from Buckingham Palace to-night, though timed 3 p.m., states: "To make clear the nature of the long and exhaustingillness it is necessary to state that the general blood infection and toxaemia were in the first feww weeks prominent foature.fi, and caused at one time grave anxiety. Moreover, the case had not presented the characteristics typical to plenro-pneumonia. Seven dsys ago the evidences or general infection became less prominent, and the iftood cultures sterile, though all medical men will know that the sterlity of blood cultures is not conclusive evidence that the general infection has ceased. "During the last five days the temperature was again rising to a higher level, yet the pneumonic and pleural signs became at the same time less marked, and neither a pleural puncture nor a study of the new and excellent radiograms disclosed any appreciable effusion. Seeing, however, that the original pleurisy had involved the diaphragm a careful watch was kept for the formation of fluid between the lung and the diaphragm, and its extension #to the posterior pulmonary surface. "This morning there were signs of this development, accompanied by an increase of leucocytosis. By an exploratory puncture at tho extreme right of the posterior base purulent fluid was obtained, which contained an organism morphologically resembling those previously found in the blood stream."
