NEW BRITISH CRUISERS DETAILS REVEALED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.! LONDON, Doc. 12. Authoritative details of the much-dis-cussed new British cruisers of the York class, hitherto kept with the utmost secrecy, were revealed to-day in the publication of Jane's Fighting Ships; The cruiser York is the first example of tho type and is considered peculiarly suitable lor tho special requirements of the* British Empire. It is claimed that flie Admiralty is justified in its preference for this medium-sized cruiser. There will be sjx of the York class, two of which aie now being built. The standard displacement is b'4CO, and they are 575-ft. long and 57ft. wide. They carry six 3^,in. calibre guns, four 4in. antiaircraft weapons and six 21 in. triple torpedo tubes. The deek armour ;s 2in. thick ami that of the conning tower 3iii. thick. The designed horsepower is WI.OCO, giving a speed of 31£ knots.
Additional details of the IO.CCOton Kent class show that they are designed for a speed of only 32 knots, though the Australia reached 34 knots at the end of a long voyage. Another cruiser of this class, namely, the Norfolk, is being launched to-morrow. She has her shaft horse-power increased to 90,000 to give a trial'speed of 32| instead of 31£ knots; ffer length is increased by 3ft. EFFICIENT SOVIET SHIPS (Australian and N.Z.
