WAIROA BOROUGH
MEETING OP COUNCIL (Herald Correspondent.) At the Wairoa Borougfi Council meeting the following were present: The Mayor, Mr. .1. Corkill, and Crs. C. Burridge, E. P. Williams, .1. Andresen, F. J. .Ringie, W. 11. Flint, Macdonald, ami J. R. Gillespie. Mr. C. Hale, in charge of the water supply, reported that during the month I'll ere had been 12 leaks in the high pressure system and one in the lowpressure mains.—Mr. A. 11. Davis reported on the progress of tho Wairoa bridge ri pairs. The Mayor reported that he had met the Highways Board and had secured the promise of £2 for £1 i'oi the work of replacing the first span of the bridge with a tilling. He had success also in respect to having Marine Parade from Murrae street to Paul street declared a main highway. The formal application was later made in both respects. Cr. Burridge, on behalf of the council, tendered the Mayor thanks for his action.
The r. ports of the lighting committee and water committee were adopted with a fvw minor alterations. The question of a water rate was referred to the committee, and also the question of increasing the storage reservoir. All consumers on the low pressure line, outside the borough, are to be metered, and tin committee is to report on charges.—lt was left to the finance committee, in association with the works committee, 1o get a representative of a certain preparation to visit Wairoa with a view to a possible contract for surfacing the bridge. The oommittee is to be take steps to repair the footbridge. *
It was decided to ask some of the visiting Government ollieers to view the site of the Kopu road river erosion, with a view to securing Government assistance,'us the cost would be beyond the means of the council.
The Public Works Department wrote stating that there was no parallel between private persons cutting up laud for profit, and the Public Works Department making an approach road to the railway station. The council considered it had been very moderate, as it could have asked for more, and could see its way to take over the approach roads.—The appointment of Mr ,}. IJ. Absolum on• the Howard Estate Board was finalised.—-Work at the tennis court pavilion was authorised. —A special meeting is to be called for December 1-t. —The water committor is to report on the supply of water to Heads' residences. —The Mayor and Cr. Maciionald were appointed a committee to act with the. other local bodies in fittingly celebrating the opening of the Waikarcraoana hydro-electric works. — It was left to the clerk to let certain closed roads to residents at 2s 6d per chain, allotting portions to owners of adjoining lands if they required Hum. —The council decided not to meet in January.—Accounts totalling £1231 10s 5d were passed for payment.
