The transfer on promotion of Detec-tive-Sergeant W. J. Duth'r, of the Napi.t police force, to the rank of senior-sergeant in charge of the Tarannki street station, Wellington, was announced this week. M)\ Butler, who has spent the greater part of his life in the service of the frown, commenced by enlisting ill the Permanent Royal Artillery, being stationed at Wellington. After two years' service in this unit lie was transferred to the police force, com inning for a further two years in Wellington. Willi the breaking out of the trouble with the natives in the Urewcra Country, Mr. Butler, avlio was then serving as a mounted constable, was drafted to this area for special service. When the trouble was settled he was transferred to Hastings, serving until 1900 as a mounted constable, his next promotion being to Oimoudvilie, where he took charge of the 7 station. After five years in Ormomlville, Mr. Butler entered the plain clothes branch of the force at Hustings. In 1920 he wont to Napier as detective-sergeant, takingcharge of the detective office in that town, where he has remained ever since. Mr. Butler, during the eight years that he has served in Napier, has earned for himself the reputation of being a most efficient oflicer, whose popularity is shown by the large circle of friends that lie will leave behind him, both in sporting and business circles. . .
