SERIOUS EXPLOSION
FUSED CABLE THE CAUSE (Per Press Association.) 1 AUCKLAND, this nay. Two shops at the corner of Queen and Ouav ; sti'eets were partly wrecked at 10.30 o'clock on Sunday morning by an explosion caused by the fusing of an underground electric cable in t.,e premises of Messrs. Keans, Ltd., mercers and men's outfitters. Four plate-glass windows ™/e -shattered, and the adjoining shop of Mr. B. R Arnott, tobacconist, sustained coresiderable damage. The floor was buckled and forced upwards. The interna partition was forced out of position, and the safe moved 10ft, Several counter cases were broken. After the power had been turned off the fire brigade, using a chemical op» v pliancec extinguished the flames. ' The pavement in the vicinity is usually well peopled on 'Sunday morning, but fortunate y nobody was near enough To SS in\ny danger. The explosion had its origin close to where a service >hox hail been coupled to the mam.;
