THE NAVY MATCH (By “Sticks”) For tho first game of the season, the match played on Thursday between a team from. H.M.S. Veronica and a Poverty Bay eleven was a very fair exhibition. Although thegNavy team was not . able to fully extend the local side, it was a good try out for the Gisborne ] team, which was chiefly composed of representative players, but one or two ; prominent figures in last' season’s re- ’ presentativc eleven were missing. i When it is considered that this was tho first outing for most, of the local players, it is realised thtat the form shown generally was of a very fair order, and the team work was good, while there were ffewer infringements ; than,, one might have expected for the opening match. . The main cause of the whistle blowing was off-side on the part of the home forwards, and obstruction, which was general among the players of both teams. l ,v ! The Poverty Bay team did not find it difficult, to gain the ascendancy, the forwards and the halves working fairly well together. The backs and goalkeeper did not have a great deal to do, hut when galled upon they proved their efficiency. Fitzrnauriec took the position of centre half, and let little past him; he was well supported by Turhitt and File, the former getting through much work. The forwards combined fairly well, and by this means they were given plenty of opportunities (o bombard tho goal. Swan, at centre, and Brown, inside right, -did effective work, the latter showing a great improvement on last year’s form and was clangorous in the circle. Nic-01, the other did some valuable* work with fast following up.
