POPPY DAY SALES
SUCCESSFUL APPEAL TO-DAY LAST YEAR’S RESPONSE ECLIPSED Sales of poppies made in town to-day easily eclipsed those of last year, despite the fact that there were fewer assistants available for the street sales. Before the morning had gone, poppies bloomed on three coats of every live worn in Gladstone road, and the business premises had been invaded by. the bearers of poppies, who did a brisk trade everywhere. The customary barriers against canvassing in office premises were raised for the morning, and the sales assistants were given every facility to dispose of the blooms.
From a depot in tho Majestic Theatre buildings, supplies of the scarlet reminders of past sacrifices were distributed throughout the town, and even in some of the suburbs the poppies were on offer, and met with a ready response. As the morning advanced the demand waxed, until at the noon hour the force of sales ladies was inundated with business. At this hour more poppies had been sold by far than were available for Gisborne' last year. It was expected that before tho end of the day last year's returns would be doubled. A GOOD RESPONSE (Per Press Association.) Tho Poppy Day street collection in Auckland realised £1192. Returns to come arc expected to bring the total to £2OOO, eclipsing Inst year's record of £IBSO. .The results to hand of 'the Poppy Day collection in Wellington show a .total of £Bl2 11a 7<l, compared with £IOB7 last year. The amounts to come in will probablv reach the figures of 1927. . The Poppy Day collection on tho Dunedin streets totalled £460, with returns from some of the suburbs yet to come in.
