Messages.) r Two attempts to make easy money in Dunedin by a young Wellington motor driver, Albert Smelt, by forging cheques for £2O and £25 in the names of a school inspector and a hotelkeeper respectively, lerl tip his appearance in court. He pleaded guilty and’was committed to the Supreme Court 1 for sentence. Poppy Day in Dunedin realised in t)io city alone £529. . A seven-roomed house at Levin owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis and family, recent arrivals from Wellington, was almost completely destroyed by fire late last evening. The husband and wife left at about 9.45 p.m. to call for their children at the pictures. The flames were noticed 20 minutes later issuing from the rear. The contents were destroyed. Noparticulars of the insurance are available. '•'* , A taxi-driver, Alexander John Burns, 24, was fined £lo' and bis license cancelled for three months at Wellington to-day for being drunk in charge of a motor car.
As a result oil a search of premises in Taranaki street yesterday, Ah Pong, 36, a Chinese, and Albert Edward Davis, 42, a plumber were charged with keeping a conirtion gaming house and being found there respectively. The police stated that the premises were used for the sale of pakapoo tickets, a quantity of which were seized. The Chinese was fined £4O, and Davis £2.
