The present intention of the : Telegraph Department is to observe- December 26'aW"C*hrisstmtts Day and "the 27th. as Boxing Pay. ' This! ■will mean that on the Monday only a smallnumher pf telegraph officers will bo open at all, and even those mcircly from 5 (o 5.30 p.m. On the Tuesday the ordinary holiday hours will be observed. As a large number of race meetings, at least ono very important athletic fixture, and other functions are set down for December 26. it was obviously expected that this would be celebrated as Boxing Day. The Telegraph Department's action will clash with, these and unless an alteration is made by ono or the other i.t will ■'■ be impossible for newspapers'to publish the reports that wjll bo'expected. Tlie Doparfment also proposes to observe Monday, January 2, as* New Year's! Day. There again only 'holiday hours Avill be followed, arid tlris will greatly interfere with publication of race results, etc.
