PEARLS WORTH £SOO

SOLD FOR 12/6 MELBOURNE, January 4. ' A few nights ago a young woman, who was wearing a string of pearls, was offered £350 for them by a man, who said that ho would make a profit in half an hour, as they were worth £SOO. The woman confessed that she had picked them out of a basket of necklaces marked “12s 6d” at a Melbourne warehouse. Inquiries were Made at the warehouse, and the mystery was cleared up. The pearls had been ordered f the wife of a member of the firm, and were worth at least £SOO. An assistant, who had unpacked the goods, had blundered, and had nut the genuine pearls with the imitations, and put aside a cheap string which, in due course was handed to the warehouseman’s wife.’
