THE HOWLERS AGAIN

BECOMING UNBEARABLE Within the last week or so the position with regard to the bowling and squealing nuisance in Gisborne has become almost, unbearable. Practically every night the air is filled with a medley of howling; noises caused by oscillating receivers, which make it extremely, unpleasant for other listeners. There is no suggestion that any amateurs are deliberately making a nuisance of themselves, and" it is evident, that through ignorance or thoughtlessness they allow their receivers to get into oscillation, thus spoiling the pleasure of others. Recently " BCL " mentioned that the Government had circularised licensees regarding this matter, announcing that it was not intended- at present to make any prosecutions for the operation of prohibited: circuits. It would appear that this circular has done more harm than good, and that now that the fear of prosecution has been removed, amateurs are taking less care with their tuning, for it is since the circular was issued that the howling has increased to such an extent. For the inexperienced amateur who does not wish to till the air with noises every (,imo be listens in, a neutralised receiver is tho best type for him to purchase. |(. i s .believed thai, the nuisance. in Oisbonic. is caused' by the number of one-valve receivers, the owners of which go chasing after long-distance stations, and. immediately put their sets into oscillation. Two Gisborne enthusiasts arc now debating as to whether they should, visit, all tho amateurs with a view to pointing oat Ihe errors in their receivers and giving whatever help is necessary, by which means they consider. they could put a slop to the trouble. There is no doubt thai something will have to be done.
