A CIVIC SQUARE.
(To Iho Editor of the Herald.) Sir, —While wending my, way homeward a few days ago and admiring the work being done by Mr. Armstrong and his men, I fancied I could see (in place of the unsightly buildings which at present Gffend the eye on the Ivaiti side of the bridge, a fine square stretching from I Wainrn road toßawiri street, and bound- , ed on one side by the bowling green and lon the other bv the esplanade. In the I centre of this srfuare I could see a fine building, comprising our new town hall, art gallery, and museum. Still further 1 could see in fancy' the vacant section at the foot of Rawiri street laid out as a public garden, with a cool fountain •splashing in the centre, while, tired city j; folk and grateful country visitors rested! jin the shade admiring our beautiful me-j 1 ! mortal, which had at last been given an i environment worthy of its dignity and I: ■beauty. Is the scheme too ambitious 1: for our City Fathers. I wonder? I should j] not fancy so, for thgugh the initial cost]] ; would be fairly heavy, the situation is an ideal one for thd purpose and deserv- h ing of something worth while. At the < same time, it would have the added ad-il vantage of widening what is now a dnn-;j gerous corner. The approach fo ono'l portion of our town would then be, in- < stead of an eyesore ns at present, “all thing of beauty and a joy for ever."—i] Yours, etc., * ( A PASSER-BY. R
