SPEEDING UP WORK
IN RAILWAY WORKSHOPS OBJECTIONS TO SCHEME (Special to the Herald.) -. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The proposal of Mr. E. T. Spidey, production engineer of the New Zealand railways, to introduce the premium bonus system into railway workshops is strongly opposed by the Addington workshops branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. Tho secretary of the branch stated to day that the proposal had been very carefully considered by members ami a resolution had been passed asking the executive of the society to semi someone to all the workshops and branches pointout the dangers and evil effects which it was considered would arise from the introduction of the system. “ There, are men here from the Old Country who have worked under tho system, and they very strongly condemn it, and urge us not to agree, to it under any circumstances,” the, secretary added. “ Mr. Spidey has certainly made out a good case from the department’s side, but we are not satisfied If, for instance, making eight pairs of lyres is a good day’s work under present conditions, and under the premium In mils system a man makes ten, he is paid for nine only, the boss getting the benefit of Ihe oilier one.
