EAST COAST RAILWAY
SETTLERS TO RECEIVE BENEFIT. Co-operation between the settlers of tile Kaiwakiy, Tufirn and Waikari districts and tho Railway and Public Works Departments (says the Hawke’s Bay Herald), is going to lead to the settlers obtaining a service, that under ordinary circumstances might not have been obtained for some considerable time to come. This service is going to enable them to use the rails of the East Coast railway as far as (hey have been laid— Waikoan station—a work only completed six weeks ago, for the transport of their wool and produce to the stores, their stock to the freezing works and to receive manures and general merchandise required for farm use. Within quite a few weeks this service will be available, and invmeditely it will effect a big saving to the. fanner, as much' as 50 per cent, in charges on smiui goods and as much as £2 a ton on manures’. Inward and outward goods being handled by the railway will he responsible for the diversion of considerable traffic off the Devil’s Elbow, always considered one of the worst stretches along the main Napier-
