GISBORNE’S UNEMPLOYED.
65 NOW ENROLLED. RELIEF WORK TO START. The number of unemployed registered i-n Gisborne to-day is the highest this winter, there being on the books of the Labour Department the names of 65 men desiring work. This figure represents an of 25, or more than 60 per cent, on the figures of a week ago. As far as can be ascertained there is no particular reason for the increase. No large works have closed down during the week, and the demand for labour is generally fairly good for this time of the year. It is considered, however, that a number of men who have been out or employment since the termination of seasonal operations in the summer are new beginning to feel the ■pinch, and are seeking employment through the official channel. Even with the present number on the books of the Department the position is far from alarming, and not nearlv so had as in former winters. Cases of distress are being reported, but not in large numbers and flic general indication is that the winter months will he passed comparatively satisgactorily. In accordance with the arrangements made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, to expend a sum of JCcCO on relief works on road formation near Motu falls, ten men are being sent to this locality on .Wednesday. As soon as the number of applications for work began to increase this work was thrown open, and a final selection of the men to be sent out was made this afternoon. Preference is being given to married men. of whom a fair proportion are included in the present number registered.
