DISTRICT SCHOOLS’ NEEDS. The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held in Napier on Friday, a number ot matters affecting the schools in the Poverty Bay district coming up I'oi emisulcrat ion. The Department, writing with reference to the erection of a shelter shed at, the Mnngatu school, said that in view of the small number of children attending the school it could not see its way to making a grant of £-11 foi a shed, but suggested that the proposals should be modified.—Received.
It was decided that in connection with the Morcre school a trial should be made with subsidising a conveyance for taking the children from Tarawa and Whnrcrntn to the school. An application will be made to tluDepartment in connection with tlie drainage required at the Mangapapn school. The primary schools in Poverty Ray are to be granted a special school holiday for their annual sports on September 17. Messrs Grant and Cooke wrote with reference to a small area, of land at Wigan school. Tolnga Bay, required by the Usiwii County Council, and suggesting that the land be transferred unde: the Public Works Act in order to save expense.—lt was decided to ask the permission of the (Minister of Education to sell the portion required to the county. Dunn, reported as follows on subsidies on voluntary contributions to the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board on Friday: The following applications for subsidies on voluntary contributions have been submitted to ■ the Department, since last meeting: Makaraka, asphalting, £4; Makarika, library books, £2 10s; Tolnga Bay. games apparatus, £ls 10s fid; Waikoliti, library books, £4; Wningnkc, pictures and apparatus, £7; Ormond, books and pictures, £s>; Te Hapara, library books and improvements, £4B los Id. APPOINTMENTS OF TEACJIEIBS. Appointments and resignations of teachers were reported to the Board by the chairman as follow: Appointments made: Miss O. C. McKinley, sole teacher, Herbertville; Mr. A. Referring to tho Board’s application for an additional grant of £IOOO foi Ihc replacement of long decks, the Department advised that at the present Time it was not in a position to provide the funds the Board asked for, and the matter must be postponed unlit later in the financial year. At. tHo present, time it was obvious to the Department that there would be some difficulty .with the funds available in supplying actual school accommodation throughout, the Dominion. The chairman stated that .the Board had brought the matter under the notice of iho Minister, and it was decided to receive the Department’s lot ter.
