EAST COAST RAILWAY.

COMPLAINT OF THE SERVICE. TANEATUA DISSATISFIED. General indignation exists in Taneatua at the new time-table of the, East Coast railway and at the general policy of the Public Works Department m connection with the running of the trains. The distance between Tauranga and Tancatua' is GO miles, and the express running at schedule time averages .11} miles an hour. A few weeks before the elections a traffic official passed through Tancatua to make special arrangements for a fast through service to Gisborne, and the public were told that the service would lie speeded up as soon as the line was opened to Tancatua. The above seems to be the net result of his exertions. The new time-table practically prohibits Gisborne passengers from travelling by train at all, necessitating them taking motor-cars from Tauranga. Further, the department lias turned down requests by the Whnkatane Racing Club and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association to run excursion trains on race and show days. The public want to know if this is what Mr. Coates calls being “out for business?”
