POVERTY BAY CLUB. The weekly committee meeting of the Poverty Bay Club was held last evening. 'Present: Messrs 1). (J. Menzies (chairman), W. Miehie (lion, secretary), F. Sfitehburv, C. I Vuiiv. J. Scot I, E. Ileid, and L.' 1 IlingworHi. A donation of a four oar trophy wa<rcceived from Messrs A. Stoneham and Co. A hearty vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Hie donors. Ii was'decided to close .entries for the pair oar races on Saturday next. The races will be rowed over the mile course, on the Taruheru river, about January 10. FMJR-O'AR CONTESTS. The fii«t round of the Joyce memorial fours and. Stoneham and Co.'s trophies was commenced last evening over the I 4 mile course on the Taruheru river. Three very close races were contested. The first was between L. O'Neill (str.). T. Sheen (3), A. Gatehouse (2), .1. Cndd (how), and J. Scot! (str.) A. Strawbridge (3). N. McCoiiuell (2), T. Gould (bow). , The crews got away to a good start, and raced on level terms for a quarter of a mile, when O'Neill commenced to draw away, and was leading by ,1 length at the footbridge. The positions were unchanged at the Derby street bridge. Here Scott put in a big effort, but O-N'eill was equal to the occasion and managed to retain his had to the finish, The second race was between F. Stichbury (str.), W. Miehie, C. Watson, O. Twiglev, and C. Ryan (str.), F. Bacon, M.' Olarkson, and D. Walker.. The crews started well and raced together for a distance, when Stichbury lorged ahead, and at the Roebuck road bridge had a length lead. Ryan spurted between the bridges, and was a length ahead scon after passing the footbridge. Ryan was still three-quarters of a length in the lead at the Derby street bridge. Both crews quickened up, and Stichbury gradually recovered lost ground, and at Barton's jetty had regained a slight lead, eventually winning by about half a length. The third race was between C. Penny (str.), R. Stevenson, F. Ardern, and L. Ulingworth, and J. Scott (str.), R. Barwick. R. Black, and' W. Glover. The, start was evenly contested, and both crews raced on level terms to the Roebuck roa ( | bridge. Here Penny quickened up. and' drew away to a half length lead. The position was unaltered at the Derby street bridge. Here both crews opened out, and a great race ensued. Penny gained 1 the verdict by threei-quarters of a length. GISBORNE ROWING CLUB. The first round in the B. S. Cox fours was completed last evening, when three races were rowed. In the first race A. V. Arthur (str), L. R. Scarfe. ('. Walsh and W. Carnilhers defeated F. 11. Jones (sir), E. A. Mosely, J. Thompson and' V. Blackburn bv about a length. Arthur led' at the start, and at the footbridge was half a length ahead. From here Arthur gradually increased his lead, and at the Derby street bridge was two lengths in front. Jones spurted at the bridge and reduced the lead to a length. The boats p:issed the post in this position.

The second race was between I'ellow (str), McKeague, Windle, Drummond and McCoy (str). Calcott. Lees, Days. Bellow gained a slight lead at the start. McCoy was unfortunate in striking the footbridge. He lost two or three strokes. This enabled Pellow to get well away. McCoy made a great effort to overtake Pellow, but without success. At Derby street Pellow was two lengths ahead. M< Coy's crew was rowing well, and gradually reducing the distance between the boats, fellow's crew were tiring and were, evidently unable to keep the pace up. Opposite the Poverty. Bay shed McCoy was within half a lenc'th of his opponent. It was a good go from there to Hie post, Pellow gaining the verdict bv a canvas.

The third race was between B. P. Winter (str). Anderson. Hunter, Murray nriel K. A. Woodward (str), Baylev. Hanea, Bullock. Winter wem after a good race. Woodward' was able to keep on level terms to the lootbaidge, but Winter pilled away from him soon after passing under the bulge, and gradually increased his lead. At McKeague's jetty he was a leii"tb ahead. Winter mainiahed bis lead to the finish. The second roam!' will be rowed tonight, when 0. W. I bane row s W.
