THE MEAT POOL.
iTo the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,—At tho meeting held on Saturday to discuss the Government proposals for the establishment of a national meat pool, the attitude of those who moved and supported the amendment to the resolution, was greatly misunderstood by most of those present, though it appears to have been appreciated by Mr. W. D. Lysnar and by Mr. George Witters, who commented upon the small margin of difference of opinion existing. According to the pronouncement mad( by Mr. Massey in Auckland and reported in your Saturday's issue, the scheme contains precisely the feature which the amendment sought to suggest, viz., the preservation of the individuality of the various districts and factories. Furthermore the Government proposes to utisilo as far as possible the present channels of distribution.
Had this pronouncement appeared be fore the meeting, it would not have been necessary to qualify our support by any amendment, but under the circum* stances it was proper to indicate the essential features without which, in our opinion, the scheme would not prove a success. Our attitude was not one of opposition to the Government, but to certain features which the scheme might later on have been found to possess. As time goes on it will probably be found that'the opinions of the minority at Saturday's meeting are more in accordance with the Government's ideas than many of those expressed bv the majority. Mr. Massey's aim is evident Iv to organise and not to revolutionise the trade, and he has invited criticism of his methods of doing it.—We are, etc W. G. SHERRATT. CLAUD H. WILLIAMS.
