The foremen of the staff and the employees in office work have been given a month's notice. Work resumed yesterday on all the coalfields. Voting on the nine-day fortnight commences next week. The defeat of the proposal is anticipated. . The storm has considerably abated, though more hea,vy rain and rough seas are anticipated. The Department of Navigation has issued regulations modifying the provisions of the Navigation Act. The section requiring vessels over 15 tons to carry one to three boys has been altered to vessels over 3000 tons, trading exclusively on the coast; overseas vessels aro still to carry the original number. The German-Australian Steamship Co. proposes to resume its services to Australia immediately the embargo against German trade is removed.
During the year 394 bankruptcy petitions were filed, as against 344 in 1920.
Applications lodsjed at the Fair Rents Courts during 1921 totalled 1125. Fifty per cent, succeeded in obtaining reductions, and 6d to 19s 6d was allowed in 278 cases. Increases of 6d to 24s 6d were allowed in 276 cases.
The year's bankruptcies disclosed a deficiency between liabilities and assets of sequestrated estates of £145,443. The sea is moderating. Arriving vessels report having had a rough "time. The fruit crops suffered severely from the storm.

The revenue for the half-year was £5,256,000, against £5,456,000 in 1920. The expenditure was £6,265,000, compared with £6.086,000 in 1920, leaving n deficit of £1,009)000, against £629,000 in 1920.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 4. Oirton, arrested in connection with the Badak mine»ease, was remanded until January 10, bail being allowed at £SOO with a personal bond' of £SOO. The Australian Glass Manufacturers, Ltd., are calling a. general meeting of shareholders for January 9 to sanction amalgamation with the Zetland glass bottle works, Sydney. The new company is to have a capital of two million, made up of 175,000 preference and 1,825,000 ordinary shares.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 4. The Commonwealth revenue for the half year was 13,084,000, compared with £16,718,000 in the previous corresponding half year. The postal receipts increased by £579,000. The Customs were responsible for a decrease.
Although the Federal Government took power to issue a new loan it is now believed that there will be no need for more loan money during the current financial year. In view of the reductions made in the defence estimates the Federal Government has been compelled to indefinitely postpone the establishment of two pi'oposed squadrons of seaplanes, and active aeroplane squadrons will bo reduced from 12 to four machines per squadron. ADELAIDE, Jan. 4. T. Williams (Victoria) beat S. Pickering (South Australia) 31 —12 in the final four bowl championship of Australia. T. Lewis (South Australia) beat C. Denniston (Victoria) 24—16 in the rink championship.
