Tho War Memorial Committee For Patu■tahi township has for sonic months 'been endeavoring to obtain 'sufficient 'funds for the ! .ereotion of a worthy memorial to tho fallen 'soldiers of the xown arid riding., This object has now been accomplished, a sum of £500 haying been raised, and Jitessrs E. Knight and Wilmorit on Saturday placed ah prder with Messrs Kane nnd Griffen, monumental masons, for a monument of a hancTsomo design, the niaih part being of a Now Zealand, soldier stnhdhig at the. "ready" position. This portion of the memorial will be carved from the best white Italian marblo,- and will be.mounted on a pedestal, the whole standing 17 feet? -high:.- The foundation Will' be .of concrete, with two steps' leading up to the base mould, die arid cap of New Zealand Moa mnrbl6. Tho top step will be inlaid 'with black and' white marble tiles. Tho die, base mould a»d cap will be what iisknowh ns drafted .and rockfaced, and :on tjie die will be a sunken panel for inscriptions, etc. The wholo forms a beautiful and ' appropriate design", and a ! credit "to the committee entrusted with • tlie work of '"obtaining- the money and selecting' ttio design. The monument will or erected on tho site of the old Pntutahi hiill,,' opposite ' Mr Gilman's store, the Phtufcahi Town Board having undertaken to.' assume' responsibility for t.hp order in which it is kept after erection.
