WAR MEMORIAL
(To the Editor.)
Sir. — I notice that the returned soldiers' have brought up the matter of a War Memorial. I agree with the ro-i marks made by "Messrs Daa-ton and Simeon that what w.e want is a memorial to the boys who have "Gone West." j We want a memorial to the memory Of . those brave boys who have shed their blood on the rugged hiUs.of Gallipoi,' the sands of .Egypt,- and. the soil of France. What I would like' to see erect- ' •"ed*-" hi Gisborne w&uld boa* substantial' "* bronze monument with -ife-sized figures representing the men- we sent to tiie war, made if possible out of some of the captured German and Turkish guns. ; By doing this we would have something historical to hand down to future generations, and with what pride' would the childa*en who ane to come after us' be able to point to this monument and say : "I am proud to know that my relatives took part m that great war and gave, their lives for the freedom which we enjoy." A marine parade or a pricket ground are all well enough m their way, but they do not quite fill the bil Ito commemorate the winning of the great world war. When we, whose sons volunteered and went with the main body and some of the early drafts, see strong young fellows carrying a cricket bat, a tenhis racket, or golf sticks, it makes us- think they had a weak heart or some other complaint, such as cold feet, when they appealed against conscription, but now they can run like a two-year-old. If they want a cricket ground let them pay for it. Playing cricket won't remind us of the great sacrifices we have made m the loss of sons. As Mr Bedford said that parents and relatives v would not car© to meet and discuss so delicate a subject, the matter might be met by sending a circular to those who havo lost relatives and a_k their opinion on the matter.-— I am, etc., A PARENT.
