Reuter's message, describing the fighting from the 27th to the 29th, concludes : On the previous day (28th) the Welsh and ITcrefords captured the dnaih Turkish positions east of Jerusalem, commanding all the valleys east of Jerusalem, Jordan, and the Dead Sea, after a stiff fight. The lirst attempt was held up by enfilade Jive along the ridge the men had to cross, but they rushed it wiith the bayonet after dusk, the Turks, as usual, not waiting for the cold steel. With the linking up of the troops north-cast of Jerusalem we hold an ira- ' menselv strong line for its defence. To-day we occupied Bieten, the ' ancient Bethel. The Turkish losses in three days' operations were extraordinarily heavy. We counted over seven hundred dead .before one position, and the enemy must have carried off a considerable number, as' is their invariable practice. We captured .six hundred prisoners, , including forty officers. The estimate of the total enemy losses , at five thousand is a low one.
