ASSISTING THE EMPIRE.
(Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Chriatchurch City Council is apparently much embarrassed by the amount of work involved in the carrying out o»f the n«w recruiting sohwne. Faced with the prospect of handling an unclassified list of ten thousand names, they sent out an urgent call for official help. Consequently Dr. Mcftab, Minister of Justice, and Mr Gray, secretary =of the Recruiting Board, left last night for Dr. McNab will »- main in Christchurch to advise the committee in the preliminary stages. The Minister of Defence, when informing your correspondent of tins plan, stated: "Anything else the "Defence Department can do to assist recruiting there will be done. We hope the Mayor will communicate with the Citizens' Defence Corps and appoint an active, vigorous secretary, with initiative, to assist in organising the scheme, or be available l™ l^,** l^ and be in touch with Dr. McNab and Mr Gray to-day to go into all the details, and work oat a complete acheme. It required energy and go. Full instructions have been issued in several memoranda sent out by the Recruiting Board." ■ ■■
